Quick Answer

String trimmer no start caused by stale fuel, fouled spark plug, blocked air filter, or flooded engine. Test spark plug and verify fresh fuel first. Replace bad gas, scrub or swap fouled plug, clean air intake, and purge flooded cylinder. Disassemble and clean carburetor jets if fuel delivery remains blocked.

A two-stroke string trimmer needs four things to start: a combustible air-fuel charge, adequate crankcase and cylinder compression, a spark of sufficient energy at the correct moment, and an open exhaust path. Nearly every no-start condition traces to a failure in one of these four. Fuel-system degradation accounts for the majority of cases, followed by fouled spark plugs, restricted air or exhaust, and crankcase sealing losses. This guide presents a diagnostic sequence ordered by probability and by test cost, so faults are isolated with minimal disassembly.

Check Fuel and the Spark Plug

Fuel Condition and Mixture Ratio

Fuel is the first inspection point. Pump gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol (E10) begins to degrade in as little as 30 days in a vented tank, and volatile fractions evaporate, lowering the fuel’s Reid vapor pressure and making cold starts difficult. Ethanol is hygroscopic. Once absorbed water exceeds roughly 0.5% by volume, phase separation can occur and a water-ethanol layer settles at the tank pickup. Premix oil in the separated fuel also loses its lubricating function.

  • Drain any fuel older than 30 to 60 days and refill with fresh gasoline of at least 87 AKI (89 AKI where the manufacturer specifies it), containing no more than 10% ethanol.
  • Confirm the premix ratio against the data plate. Most current professional trimmers specify 50:1 (2.0%), and some older or budget models specify 40:1 (2.5%). A 50:1 mix requires 2.6 oz (77 mL) of oil per US gallon.
  • Inspect for a visible water layer, varnish, or amber-to-brown discoloration. Healthy fuel is clear to pale straw colored and has a sharp, light odor, while oxidized fuel smells sour or like varnish.
  • Shake the premix container before filling. Poorly blended oil can leave the carburetor with a lean or overly rich charge.
