A flooded lawn mower has excess fuel in the cylinder or carburetor, preventing the engine from starting. Why Lawn Mowers Flood (Common Causes)
Understanding why your mower floods helps you both fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.
Over-priming. Many lawn mowers have a primer bulb or choke that enriches the fuel mixture before startup. Pressing the bulb too many times or using the choke excessively pumps extra fuel into the engine. When fuel accumulates faster than it can be burned during combustion, it floods the cylinder and drowns the spark plug.
Stuck carburetor float. The float in your mower’s carburetor rises and falls with fuel level, controlling how much fuel enters the engine. If the float sticks in the down position (or the needle valve jams), fuel continues flowing into the carburetor bowl and eventually overflows into the cylinder. Debris, rust, or varnish buildup can cause this sticking.
Left-open fuel valve. Some mowers have a fuel shutoff valve. If you leave it open when storing the mower, fuel can leak through a stuck needle valve and pool in the cylinder, carburetor, or intake manifold.
Cold engine starting. Cold engines require richer fuel mixtures, but attempting to start a cold engine multiple times without success can cause fuel to accumulate if the engine never fires.

Step 1: Turn off the fuel supply. If your mower has a fuel shutoff valve (usually a lever or knob on the fuel line), turn it to the off position. This prevents more fuel from entering the system while you work.
Step 2: Disconnect the spark plug wire. Locate the spark plug wire or cap on top of the engine (usually a thick rubber or plastic connector). Gently twist and pull it off the spark plug. Disconnecting it ensures safety if the engine accidentally starts while you’re working.
Step 3: Remove the spark plug. Using a spark plug socket (typically 18mm or 21mm) attached to a ratchet wrench, unscrew the spark plug from the engine head. Once loose, pull it out by hand. Inspect it: if it’s wet with fuel or covered in black soot, flooding has occurred.
Step 4: Clear fuel from the cylinder. With the spark plug removed, pull the starter cord 5–10 times in smooth, firm strokes. This motion moves the piston up and down, forcing excess fuel and air out of the cylinder through the spark plug hole. You may see fuel spray or drip from the hole—this is normal and intended. Step 5: Clean or replace the spark plug. A wet spark plug can be dried and reused; a fouled or damaged one should be replaced. To dry a wet plug, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. If the plug is heavily fouled (black deposits, significant corrosion, or visible damage), install a new one. Spark plugs are inexpensive and widely available at hardware and auto-parts stores.
Step 6: Reinstall the spark plug. Thread the plug carefully by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten it with your spark plug socket and ratchet. Tighten firmly but not excessively—over-tightening can crack the ceramic or strip the threads.
Step 7: Reconnect the spark plug wire. Push the wire cap firmly back onto the spark plug until you feel or hear a click. A secure connection is essential for proper ignition.
Restarting After Clearing the Flood
Now that you’ve cleared excess fuel, restarting the mower correctly prevents re-flooding.
Proper restart procedure. Turn the fuel shutoff valve back to on (if you closed it earlier). Do not use the primer bulb or choke on your first restart attempt. The engine already has plenty of fuel; adding more will simply flood it again. Set the throttle to half or full position, then pull the starter cord in smooth, steady strokes. The mower should catch and start within a few pulls. Once it runs, let it idle for a minute, then increase the throttle to normal mowing speed.
If it still won’t start. Pull the starter cord 10–15 more times without the spark plug installed to ensure all excess fuel is cleared. Reinstall and dry the spark plug again (or replace it with a new one if you haven’t already). If the mower still doesn’t start after two or three attempts, the problem may lie deeper in the carburetor system, and you should move on to the next section.
When to Check the Carburetor Float and Needle Valve
If flooding happens repeatedly even after clearing the cylinder, the carburetor float or needle valve likely needs attention.
How the float and needle work. The needle valve sits inside the carburetor and controls fuel flow into the float bowl. As fuel enters, it lifts the float; when the bowl fills, the float rises high enough to push the needle valve shut, stopping fuel flow. If the needle sticks open or the float gets stuck in the down position, fuel overfills the bowl and leaks into the engine.
Quick inspection. Remove the carburetor’s air filter (usually held by a clip or bolt) and look down into the carburetor throat. You may see fuel pooled in the bowl or dripping from the overflow tubes. Gently tap the side of the carburetor with a plastic hammer or wooden mallet. Sometimes a stuck float or needle will unstick from a light mechanical shock. If you hear fuel sloshing or dripping stops, the float may have freed itself temporarily—but it will likely stick again, signaling a deeper problem.

2-Stroke vs. 4-Stroke Differences
Most modern lawn mowers are 4-stroke engines, but some smaller or older models use 2-stroke engines. The flooding fix is essentially the same, but a few details differ.
4-stroke engines (most common). These separate intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes, so fuel and air stay in the cylinder during operation. The quick-fix procedure described above applies directly to 4-stroke mowers. A flooded 4-stroke has fuel pooling in the cylinder and carburetor.
2-stroke engines. These combine multiple strokes in fewer cycles and use a fuel-oil mixture (typically 50:1, 40:1, or per manufacturer specs). A flooded 2-stroke also floods from over-priming or a stuck float, and the fix is the same: remove the spark plug, pull the starter cord to clear fuel, clean the plug, and restart. One minor difference: after clearing a 2-stroke, ensure you’re using the correct fuel-oil ratio when refueling. Incorrect ratios (too much oil or too much fuel) can themselves cause starting problems and fouled plugs.
Identifying your engine type. Check your mower’s manual or the engine label. 4-stroke mowers have a separate oil fill cap; 2-stroke fuel tanks usually have a label showing the correct fuel-oil ratio. When in doubt, consult the manual or contact the mower manufacturer.

Safety during repairs. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before working on the engine to prevent accidental starting. Prevent over-priming. Read your mower’s manual for the correct priming procedure. Typically, prime only 1–3 times before the first start of the season; a single primer bulb press or two is often enough to restart a warm mower. If the mower doesn’t start after a few pulls, the issue is likely not fuel starvation—don’t keep priming.
Proper fuel shutoff. Before storing your mower for the season, close the fuel shutoff valve (if equipped) or run the engine until the tank is empty to prevent fuel from degrading in the carburetor and causing future flooding or sticking.
Regular carburetor maintenance. If you use non-stabilized fuel or store your mower for several months, ethanol in the fuel can varnish the carburetor’s internal passages.
