For a typical lawn or landscape edger, wear eye and foot protection, clear debris, and check for buried utilities first. Set a shallow first-pass depth, start with the blade clear of the ground, then walk slowly with the guide wheel against hardscape or a marked line. Keep the cut vertical. What an edger is for (and when to use something else)
A lawn or landscape edger is built to cut a narrow vertical groove between turf and a sidewalk, driveway, curb, or planting bed. That trench is what makes the edge look crisp and what slows grass from creeping over hardscape. The tool is not a substitute for a mower, and it is not the same job as general string-trimmer cleanup.
A mower cuts grass height horizontally across the lawn. An edger cuts down, along a line. If you try to “edge” with the mower deck by riding the wheels on the sidewalk, you usually scalp the turf, chip the concrete, or leave a ragged lip. The edger’s job is the vertical face, not the weekly height of the whole yard.
A string trimmer is mainly for length and cleanup around posts, fences, and bed lines. Many people tilt a trimmer to shave a rough edge, and that can work for light maintenance. A dedicated edger blade is still designed for a cleaner, more vertical trench. Overlapping tools exist, and some multi-head machines can switch from trimmer to edger. None of those categories is always safer or always better. Match the tool to the cut you need: height control with a mower, reach and cleanup with a trimmer, a defined vertical edge with an edger.
An edger is the wrong tool when you need to mow a large area, grind a stump, cut roots under a slab, trench for a deep utility line, or reshape soil like a tiller. It is also the wrong first tool if the grass is so long that you cannot see the hardscape or the line you intend to follow. Mow first so the edge is visible, then edge. Paint edger
A paint edger is a pad, shield, or small roller made to cut in a painted line along trim, ceilings, or baseboards. You load it with paint and guide it so the wet edge stays off the adjacent surface. There is no spinning metal blade and no trench. Technique is about loading the pad evenly, wiping excess, and keeping the guide against the trim. That is a finishing skill, not a landscape cut.
Concrete or sidewalk finishing edger
A concrete edger is a hand trowel or a power finishing tool used while concrete is still plastic. It rounds or defines the slab edge so the corner is less likely to chip and so water sheds the way the finisher intended. Timing depends on the mix, weather, and how the slab is setting. That work belongs with concrete finishing, not with a lawn edger blade.
Those tools do not share start-up, stance, or shutdown with a lawn edger. The rest of this article is for lawn and landscape edgers only.

Manual or half-moon edger
A manual edger is often a half-moon or step blade on a long handle. You place the blade on the line, drive it with your foot, and rock or pull it to slice a vertical cut. There is no motor, so there is no spinning disc, but the blade is still sharp and can glance off concrete onto your shoe. These tools are quiet and simple. They take more time on a long driveway and more effort in dry, compacted soil or thick thatch.
Powered stick edger
A stick edger looks like a string trimmer with a rigid shaft and a small vertical blade or disc near a guide wheel. You hold it with both hands, keep the housing upright, and walk the guide along the hardscape. Corded, battery, and gas versions all exist. The shared motion is the same: blade vertical, guide in contact, slow forward pace. Walk-behind wheeled edger
A walk-behind edger is a small wheeled machine with a larger vertical blade and a curb or guide wheel. You push it more like a compact outdoor power tool than a handheld stick. The blade still needs to stay vertical, and the guide still needs to stay against the line. These units can feel more stable on a long, straight sidewalk, but they are heavier to lift over steps and more awkward in tight beds.

Corded electric models need a suitable outdoor extension practice and a dry work area. Keep the cord behind you and out of the blade path. Do not run a corded edger in wet grass or standing water. Walk the line before you start. Pick up stones, toys, hoses, landscape pins, and loose wire. Gravel left in the path becomes projectiles. A hidden hose or low-voltage wire can wrap the blade or shred in an instant.
Treat the soil strip beside a walk or drive as possibly hiding irrigation and cables. Heads sit just off the concrete more often than people expect. Tracer wires, landscape lighting, and shallow utility laterals can run in the same strip. On unfamiliar ground, follow local utility-location practice before you cut. Do not assume the strip is empty because grass is growing there. If you see a valve box, a repaired patch, or a head, mark it and steer around it rather than guessing the pipe depth.
Hardscape itself is a hazard to the blade and to the slab. Pavers can chip. Expansion joints can grab a disc. Metal edging leftover from an old bed can kick the tool. If you cannot see the line clearly, mow and rake first.
Inspect the tool
Look at guards first. A missing or bent guard is a reason to stop, not a reason to “be careful.” Check the edger blade for cracks, missing chunks, severe bends, or a loose fastener. A damaged blade can shed pieces. Check handles, the guide wheel, and any depth lever so they move as the maker intended and lock where they should.
Then inspect by power type. On a corded unit, look for a damaged cord, cracked plug, and a strain relief that is still attached. Mark the line and set a conservative depth
A clean edge comes from a line you can see and a depth you can steer. The first pass should stay shallow and controllable. Trying to reach a deep trench immediately is a common way to wander, stall, and nick concrete.
Using a guide wheel against hardscape
On a sidewalk, driveway, or curb, the guide wheel or curb guide is the main way to keep a straight cut. Set the wheel so it rides the hard surface while the blade hangs just off the edge in the soil. You want light, steady contact, not a jammed wheel that climbs the lip or drops into a crack.

Marking a bed or path with no hardscape

On a bed curve, follow the hose or string in short segments. Stop and reset if the shaft starts to lean. A smooth curve is a series of controlled adjustments, not one long sweeping motion. Inside corners of a sidewalk often hide gravel and irrigation; treat them as inspection points, not as places to speed up so you can finish.
If the blade hits a hidden object
If you strike rock, metal, a root, or a head, stop forward motion, shut the tool down, and inspect. Do not keep walking in the hope that the blade will “cut through.” Repeated stalling after a strike means stop, not force. Wait until the blade has stopped moving before you look closely. Blades can continue to spin briefly after power is cut; there is no single wait time that is true of every model, so give the disc a clear moment and treat it as live until it is still.
Check the blade, the guard, and the guide wheel. Check the hardscape and any irrigation you may have hit. If the blade is bent, cracked, or missing a piece, do not restart. If you nicked a pipe or cable, stop the job and deal with that hazard before any more cutting.
Stop, clear the blade area, and store the tool
Shutdown is part of the cut, not an afterthought. Grass packs around a vertical blade quickly. Clearing it while the disc can still move is how people reach into a running deck.
Shut down by power type
Release the switch or throttle and let the tool come to a stop. Stop a gas engine with the method on the machine. Unplug a corded edger at the tool or at a point you control so the cord cannot be re-energized while you are at the blade. Remove the battery from a cordless unit before you turn the machine over or pull grass from the housing. Do not rely on a trigger lock alone if you are about to put a hand near the disc.
When it is safe to look at or clear the blade
It is safe to inspect or clear the blade only after power is removed and the blade has stopped. Remember that the disc can keep moving briefly. If grass is packed so tightly that the blade will not turn freely on the next start, clear it now. Packed wet turf is a common reason the next pass tears instead of slices. Wipe the housing. Avoid spraying water into motors, vents, or switches.
Clippings, blade, cord or battery, and leftover fuel
Sweep or blow clippings off the sidewalk so they do not wash into a drain as a green slurry, and so the next rain does not glue them back onto the fresh edge. Check that you did not leave a wire, stake, or stone in the trench.
Store the edger in a dry place out of children’s reach. Coil a cord so it is not a trip line and so the jacket is not pinched. Remove a battery and store it as the maker directs; do not leave a pack on a charger as a default storage method unless that is what the instructions allow.
