  1. Identify the Starting Point: Choose a cutter tooth on one side of the chain (e.g., the left side) and mark it with a marker. This is your reference point to ensure you sharpen every tooth exactly once.
  2. Position the File: Place the round file into the gullet of the first cutter. The file guide should rest on top of the cutter and the depth gauge. The angle of the file relative to the guide bar should match your chain’s specified filing angle. For many standard chains, this is approximately 30 degrees, but always check your chain’s documentation if possible.
  3. Apply Steady Pressure and File: Push the file forward across the cutter with smooth, consistent strokes. Apply firm, even pressure on the forward stroke only. Lift the file on the return stroke to avoid dulling it. The number of strokes needed depends on how dull the tooth is and the condition of the file. The key is to use the same number of strokes and the same pressure for every cutter on that side of the chain.
  4. Check Your Work: After a few strokes, visually inspect the cutter. You should see a bright, shiny, sharp edge. If the edge is still dull or nicked, continue filing until it is restored. Be careful not to over-file, as this weakens the tooth.
  5. Move to the Next Tooth: Proceed to the next cutter on the same side, maintaining the same angle and stroke count. Continue until you reach your marked starting tooth.
  6. Sharpen the Other Side: Repeat the entire process for the cutters on the opposite side of the chain. Remember that the filing angle is mirrored on this side.

Consistency is the most critical factor. Uneven filing will cause the saw to cut crookedly and can create unsafe conditions.

Setting and Checking Depth Gauges

After sharpening all the cutters, you must check and, if necessary, adjust the depth gauges. Over time, as cutters are filed down, the depth gauges become relatively higher, reducing the chain’s bite.

To check them, place the depth gauge tool over the chain. The tool has a slot that fits over the depth gauge. If the top of the depth gauge protrudes above the level of the tool, it needs to be filed down. Use a flat file to carefully file the top of the depth gauge until it is flush with the surface of the tool. File only the top surface, maintaining its rounded front profile.

Adjust every depth gauge on the chain. This step is crucial for both performance and safety. Incorrect depth gauge settings are a common cause of poor cutting and increased kickback risk. After filing, run your finger over the depth gauges to ensure they are smooth and uniform.

While manual filing is the fundamental skill, other methods exist. Electric chainsaw sharpeners are powered tools that clamp onto the guide bar and use a grinding wheel to sharpen each tooth. They can be faster and require less skill to achieve a consistent angle, but they also remove more metal per pass and can overheat the cutter if used improperly. They are a good option for those who sharpen many chains regularly.
