A common way to lock the shaft is a hole in the gearbox, deflector, or driver area that accepts a locking pin or a similar metal pin. When the hole in the rotating part lines up with a hole in the housing, the pin keeps the shaft from turning. The hole location is not identical on every machine. Some units put it on the gearbox face; others put it near the driver under the head. Look for a round opening sized for a pin, not for a random gap in the debris shield.
Nearby parts are not substitutes for that lock. Do not pry against the cutting attachment guard, the debris shield, the thin drive tube, or the line knives. Those parts are meant to deflect cuttings or hold line, not to take wrench force. Prying on the guard can crack it. Twisting the drive tube can bend it. Using the gearbox housing as a cheater bar can damage seals or the case.
Keep the scope of this layout in mind. Brushcutter blades, metal knife attachments, and Stihl KombiSystem tools can use different adapters, nuts, or drivers. A wheeled or backpack machine may not share the handheld consumer layout at all. Those attachments may still sit at the end of a shaft, but the fastener and lock method can differ enough that the sequence below does not apply. Identify the head type and any markings first
Pause before you twist anything. Fastener style and loosen direction depend on the head and the machine. Printed arrows or LH/RH marks on the head, if present, outrank guesswork. The owner’s manual outranks a generic left-or-right rule from a video or a neighbor’s trimmer.
Look at the center of the cutting head. Some heads show a visible retaining nut or a metal hex. Others hide the fastener under a knob, cap, or bump button. A two-piece spool housing often means you can open the bump-feed unit for line without taking the whole head off the shaft, which is a different job from removing the head. Aftermarket branding on the plastic is a warning that the nut, thread, or adapter may not match a factory Stihl head even if the shape looks familiar.
Check the face and skirt of the head for arrows, “loosen,” or left-hand / right-hand marks. If the head is marked, follow that mark. Tools and setup that usually suffice
You rarely need a special kit. Eye protection and gloves come first. A locking pin or a snug metal pin that fits the machine’s locking hole is the usual way to hold the shaft. If a retaining nut is actually visible, a wrench that fits that nut is appropriate. Do not assume a universal pin diameter or wrench size; use what fits without hammering the pin or rounding the nut.
Avoid pliers on a plastic bump-feed housing. Teeth bite into the spool body and can crack it or peel the drive dogs. Do not improvise leverage on the guard, debris shield, or drive tube. Heat, impact guns, and penetrating oil are not default steps on a fueled or battery machine sitting in your yard.
Support the trimmer so the gearbox and head are accessible and the shaft is not the fulcrum. A bench with the cutting end hanging slightly off the edge, or a stable spot on the ground with the fuel tank upright, is enough for most handheld units. Keep the battery pack or spark plug cap off the tool while it is in this position. Have a small tray ready for the pin, spool, spring, and any washers so parts do not vanish in the grass.
Lock the shaft, then unscrew the head
The usual method on a common screw-on head is a lock-and-unscrew sequence. Isolate power first, then clear enough line or knives to get a grip, lock the shaft, turn the head in the direction indicated by the manual or the markings, and lift the head off the shaft. Do not treat one rotation as the rule for every Stihl weed eater.
Isolate power and get a clean grip
Confirm the engine cannot start or the battery pack is removed. Let hot parts cool. Cut or unwind enough trimmer line that it cannot catch your glove or wrap the shaft while you turn the head. If the head uses knives, treat the edges as sharp and keep them pointed away from your hands. Wipe packed grass off the hub so you can see whether you are turning a plastic housing or a metal nut.

On a visible metal nut, use the wrench on the nut and keep the housing from being the only thing you squeeze. Apply steady turning force in the direction the manual or the head markings indicate. If there are no marks and you have not checked the manual, stop and check them now. Left-hand thread is only a possibility on some units; it is not a fact for your machine until the documentation or a clear mark says so.
The head should turn on the output shaft while the shaft stays locked. You are looking for thread movement, not a sudden crack. A few degrees of motion that then frees up is normal once the threads break loose. A sudden give that feels like plastic tearing, a grinding that feels like cross-threading, or a nut that rounds under the wrench means stop. Forcing the wrong rotation can strip shaft threads, crack the head, or round a nut. Sudden impact can do the same even in the correct direction if the shaft was never locked.
When the head unscrews, keep one hand on it so the spool, spring, and washers do not dump onto the ground. Back it off the remaining threads by hand once it is loose. Pull the locking pin out only after the head is free or after you have the assembly under control. Store the pin with the other small parts. Do not run the trimmer to “help” the head off, and do not hold the cutting attachment while someone else pulls the starter or squeezes the trigger.
If the head is a multi-piece unit, notice the order of the spool, spring, and covers as they come apart. Photographing the stack with a phone is reasonable so you can reassemble later. When your Stihl will not follow the usual sequence
Not every Stihl uses the handheld consumer layout described above. Commercial machines, KombiSystem powerheads, backpack units, and wheeled trimmers can use different fasteners, different drivers, and different shaft locks. The owner’s manual is the authority for those products. Do not assume interchangeability with a homeowner bump-feed head.
Differences that are common enough to watch for include a retaining nut under a cover or bumper, a head that only unscrews after a center knob is removed, a blade adapter instead of a line head, and a shaft that has no obvious locking hole. A nut under a cover means you are removing a fastener, not twisting the whole plastic body as if it were the nut. A blade adapter may use washers and a specific orientation that a line head does not. A missing lock hole may mean the lock is elsewhere, or that this gearbox was never meant to be serviced with a pin from a different model.
If the unit is a Stihl KombiSystem, a backpack blower-style powerhead driving a trimmer attachment, or a wheeled trimmer, stop guessing from handheld advice. Those machines can place the cutting attachment on a different shaft, use a different coupling, or retain a blade with hardware that is easy to start backward. Continuing without the manual is unsafe when you cannot isolate power clearly, cannot lock the shaft, or cannot tell whether you are turning a head or an adapter that belongs on a metal blade.
The same stop rule applies when the head in front of you does not match a typical screw-on or keyed consumer cutting head. Unknown clips, left-over adapters, or a shaft that looks modified are reasons to use a dealer or a qualified shop rather than more force. This process is only for removing a typical consumer head so it can be replaced, restrung, or inspected.
If the head is stuck, damaged, or aftermarket
A head that will not move is often not welded on. Packed vegetation in the threads, a shaft that is still spinning, or force in the wrong direction are common reasons it feels stuck. Recheck power isolation, the locking pin, and the marks on the head before you escalate.
Non-destructive checks come first. Confirm you are not turning the entire shaft. Confirm the pin is fully seated. Clean grass and dirt from the joint between the head and the driver so you can see whether the head is even a screw-on part. Look at the plastic for already-rounded ribs and at a metal nut for already-rounded corners. If the housing is crumbling, stop using the housing as a wrench.
Avoid heat on a fuel machine, hammering on the shaft, gripping the thin drive tube, and twisting the gearbox housing. Those moves can bend the tube, damage seals, or create a fire or burn hazard. Do not build a homemade puller or grind the head off while fuel or a battery is still in the picture. Penetrating oil, freeze spray, or a larger wrench are not promised fixes, and they are easy to misuse on plastic and on a shaft you still need.
Aftermarket heads deserve extra caution. They may look like a factory head and still use a different nut or thread. An unknown adapter on the output shaft can hide damaged threads. If the shaft is bent, the threads look peeled, the head is cracked through, or you cannot identify the fastener, stop and use a dealer or qualified shop. If the head does come off, inspect without turning the moment into a full repair guide. Look at the shaft threads for flattening or crossing. What to do after the head is off

Check the shaft threads, the driver, and the cutting attachment guard for obvious damage before you install another head. A replacement head must match the machine’s mounting and the owner’s manual. Do not assume any aftermarket head that “looks close” is the correct thread or driver.
Do not run the trimmer with the head removed. The machine should not be operated without the intended cutting attachment and guard in place. An exposed spinning shaft is a hazard, and the trimmer is not meant to be tested that way.
