A flooded gas lawn mower has too much liquid fuel in the carburetor or cylinder, so the spark plug cannot ignite the mixture. Confirm it with a raw-gas smell, a wet plug, and an engine that cranks after heavy priming, a closed choke, or tipping but will not fire. What a flooded lawn mower actually is

When a gas engine is flooded, liquid gasoline has entered the combustion area faster than it can be burned or vented. The spark plug sits in a wet, overly rich mixture. A spark may still be present, but it cannot reliably ignite a film of liquid fuel the way it ignites vapor mixed with air. The starter rope may pull freely, the blade may turn, and the flooded engine still never fires.

On a typical walk-behind gasoline lawn mower, that extra fuel usually arrives through the carburetor. The carburetor meters gasoline into incoming air. A primer bulb, if the machine has one, squirts extra fuel toward the carburetor throat to help a cold start. The choke plate restricts air so the first mixture is richer. Those features are useful in small doses. Too many primer presses, a choke left closed, or a carburetor that will not shut off fuel can wet the plug and drown the cylinder.

The extra fuel can sit in more than one place. Some of it coats the spark plug. Some remains in the cylinder. Some soaks the air filter if the mower was tipped or if fuel washed backward from the carburetor. On a four-stroke engine, severe tipping can also send gasoline toward the crankcase, which is a different problem than a simply wet plug. On a two-stroke engine, the fuel already contains oil. Treat flooding as a working diagnosis, not a certainty based on smell alone. The useful pattern is a recent action that can dump extra fuel, a wet combustion area, and an engine that cranks but never pops.

Signs that point toward a flood

  • You pressed the primer bulb many times, or you primed a warm engine.
  • The choke was left on, or the throttle stayed in a closed-choke start position after the engine should have been running.
  • The mower was recently tipped, rolled with the carburetor downhill, or refueled while it was running or still hot.
  • There is a strong raw-gasoline odor around the air filter, carburetor, or spark plug.
  • The engine spins freely when you pull the starter and never coughs or fires.

If you isolate the spark-plug wire and remove the plug, a flooded plug is typically wet with fuel and smells like gasoline. That visual check is more useful than counting failed pulls. There is no universal number of pulls that proves flooding.

Clues that suggest a different problem

  • A bone-dry plug and little or no fuel smell often mean fuel is not arriving: an empty tank, a clogged line, a failed primer, or varnish blocking the carburetor.
  • An engine that will not crank at all is not a flood. Look at the starter, a seized engine, a jammed blade, or a safety interlock.
  • A dry, black, sooty plug can mean the engine has been running rich or burning oil. That is not the same as a fresh flood, though a rich carburetor can later cause flooding.
  • Stale gasoline can prevent starting and can also leave a float or needle valve stuck. Clearing a wet plug may fail if the fuel is old and gummy. There is no single shelf life that applies to every climate and ethanol blend, so treat sour-smelling fuel as a separate issue.

If several flood signs line up, move to the safety steps and a conservative unflood. If the plug is dry or the engine will not turn, stop and diagnose that problem instead of drying parts that are not wet.

Safety steps before you touch fuel or the ignition system

Gasoline vapors ignite easily. Cranking an engine can create a spark. Fuel on skin and in eyes is irritating, and exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Put those hazards ahead of any repair.

  • Work outdoors on a level, well-ventilated surface, away from cigarettes, pilot lights, grinders, heaters, and other ignition sources.
  • Do not work in a closed garage even if you only plan to pull the rope.
  • Before you remove the spark plug or open a wet air-filter cover, pull the spark-plug boot off the plug. Keep the metal terminal away from the plug and away from any open fuel. Do not let the loose wire rest where it can arc.

  • If you spill gasoline, stop and clean it up with absorbent material. Do not store fuel-soaked rags in a pile or in a sealed living space. Dry them outdoors away from ignition, or dispose of them as local hazardous-waste rules require.
  • Do not burn off fuel, pour gasoline on the ground, or crank the engine with a spark near an open cylinder full of wet fuel.

Keep children and pets away while fuel is exposed. Follow the mower’s own safety labels. If you are uncomfortable isolating the ignition system or handling spilled fuel, stop and take the machine to a small-engine shop.

Clear the flood on a typical walk-behind gas mower

You do not need a full shop setup. A spark-plug wrench that fits your engine, clean cloths, eye protection, and the mower manual are enough for a simple flood. Replace the plug or air filter only if the old part stays wet, is damaged, or is the type your manual specifies. Control names vary by brand, so read the decal on the handle and engine cover before you move levers.

Set the controls and stop adding fuel

  1. Stop pressing the primer. Extra primes make a flood worse.
  2. Move the choke toward off or run, and move the throttle toward fast or the start position labeled on your mower. You want more air and less extra fuel.
  3. If you only over-primed lightly and the gasoline smell is mild, wait in open air and try a few starts with no additional primer. A light flood sometimes clears if the plug can dry and the mixture leans out.

Dry the plug and expel wet mixture

  1. If the smell is strong, the plug is wet, or waiting does not help, isolate the spark-plug wire, then remove the spark plug. Keep the boot away from the plug hole.
  2. Dry the plug thoroughly with a clean cloth. If it stays wet, is cracked, or the electrode is fouled with wet debris, replace it with the plug type listed in your manual. Do not guess gap or tightening values; use the engine documentation.
  3. With the plug still out and the wire still isolated, keep the mower level and pull the starter several times. That expels wet mixture from the cylinder. There is no required pull count. Stop if you hear grinding or the rope will not rewind.

Do not crank the engine in a way that could spark near open fuel. The isolated lead is what keeps that pull from becoming an ignition source at the plug hole.

Check the air filter and a tipped mower

If the foam or paper air filter is wet with fuel, remove it and let it dry outdoors, or replace it. Do not start a mower with a dripping filter. Fuel held in the filter can rewet the intake on the next pull and recreate the flood you just cleared.

If the mower was tipped, fuel may have reached the filter, the muffler area, or, on a four-stroke, the crankcase. A simple plug-dry may not be enough. Stay level, look for leaks, and check whether the oil on a four-stroke looks unusually thin or smells strongly of gasoline. Appearance alone is not a lab test. If the oil looks fuel-thinned or the engine sounds wrong after it starts, get service rather than running it hard.

On a two-stroke, the mixture you expel contains oil. Wipe it off the deck and plug area with a rag you will dry outdoors or dispose of properly. Do not dump mixed fuel into soil or a household drain.

Do not use starting fluid as first aid. If you consider it at all, treat it as optional, easy to overdo, and inappropriate on a still-wet flood. Do not assume every carburetor has an accessible bowl drain, and do not open fuel fittings unless you know how that specific carburetor is built and can catch spilled gasoline safely.

Reinstall a dry plug, seat the boot fully, and only then attempt a restart.

Restart without flooding the engine again

After the plug is dry and the boot is fully seated, try to start with little or no primer and with the choke open or in run, especially if the engine is already wet with fuel or was just running when it quit. Factory cold-start choke and primer use is brief and model-specific. Once the flood is cleared, follow the decal on your mower rather than repeating the sequence that wet the plug.

Pull the starter in a smooth, full stroke. Do not expect a start in a set number of pulls. If the engine coughs, pops, or starts and dies, one careful prime or a moment of choke may help. More priming often re-floods it.

If it still will not fire, stop pulling. Isolate the wire and remove the plug again:

  • Wet again: fuel is still arriving too fast, or leftover fuel is still in the intake. Recheck the air filter, confirm the choke is open, and treat repeat wetting as a fuel-system fault.
  • Dry: the flood may be cleared and the no-start is now spark, valve, compression, or fuel-delivery related. A new plug does not always fix flooding, and a dry plug after a flood-clear does not prove the ignition system is healthy.

Never test-run indoors. If the engine starts, let it run outdoors at a moderate throttle long enough to confirm it stays running, then mow or shut it down according to the manual. If it only runs on choke and dies when the choke opens, the carburetor may be dirty or the float may not be controlling fuel. That is beyond drying a plug.

When flooding means the carburetor or fuel system is at fault

A one-time flood after heavy priming or tipping is often operator-related. Repeat flooding after correct technique usually means too much fuel is still entering.

At a high level, these faults can keep wetting the plug:

  • Debris holding a float needle open so the bowl cannot shut off.
  • A sunk or stuck float that no longer rises to close the needle valve.
  • A choke plate that does not open, so the mixture stays rich after start.
  • A leaking primer line, or a primer that dribbles fuel continuously.
  • A blocked tank vent that upsets bowl level and can cause overflow or starvation depending on the fault.

Operator habits still matter. Extra primes on a hot engine and leaving the choke on after start will wet a healthy carburetor. Tipping can look like a flood even after the plug is dry if fuel is still in the filter or has reached the four-stroke crankcase.

Stop do-it-yourself work and take the mower to a shop if fuel weeps from the carburetor, if you cannot keep the engine from flooding after a dry plug and correct settings, if you are uncomfortable opening the fuel system, or if a four-stroke shows signs of fuel in the crankcase. A rider, or any machine whose manual tells you not to service the fuel system yourself, also belongs at a shop once simple unflood steps fail.

A documented carburetor service is the honest next step. Jet sizes, float heights, and part numbers belong in the service literature for that engine, not in a general unflood article.

How to make flooding less likely next time

Prime only as the mower’s instructions describe. That is typically a few presses on a cold engine and none when the engine is already warm. Open the choke after the engine starts. If a warm restart needs anything, it is usually throttle position, not another series of primer shots.

Store and service the mower level. Do not tilt it with the air filter or carburetor downhill if you can avoid it. Safe tilt direction varies by model; the manual wins when you must change oil or access the underside.

Use reasonably fresh gasoline in an approved container. Ethanol-blended pump gas can contribute to varnish and starting trouble over time. There is no universal number of days that applies to every climate and blend. For long storage, emptying the system or using a stabilizer is general practice, not a product endorsement. Old, varnished fuel is a common reason a float needle sticks and a mower floods again after you dry the plug.

Keep the air filter clean and dry. A neglected filter can soak up fuel after a tip and then dump that fuel back into the intake on the next start.
