Start outdoors with the blade area clear. Disconnect the spark-plug lead or remove the key before you inspect anything. Stale gasoline is the usual winter no-start, so drain or replace it, check four-stroke oil, and confirm the air filter and spark plug are clean. Reconnect ignition, set choke or primer from the labels on that engine, and start without flooding. If it still will not fire, isolate fuel, spark, and air. Electric and riding mowers need different checks.
A walk-behind gasoline lawn mower that sat through winter storage often looks ready and still refuses to fire. The engine is usually fine. What failed is the fuel, a basic service item, or a control left in the wrong position. Work through safety, storage prep, and the normal starting sequence before you keep pulling the cord.
Safety checks before you try to start
Roll the mower outside first. Gasoline engines produce carbon monoxide, a colorless gas that can build up in a garage, shed, or basement even if a door is open. Do all fuel work and the first start of the season outdoors, away from doors, windows, and anyone standing in the exhaust stream.
Before you reach under the deck, clear the discharge chute, or turn the blade by hand, stop the ignition from firing. On a typical walk-behind mower that means pulling the spark-plug lead off the plug and parking it so it cannot snap back. On a machine with a removable start key, take the key out and keep it with you. Do not disable a blade brake, operator-presence bar, seat switch, or other interlock to make starting easier.
Fuel, fire, and bystanders
Treat leftover gasoline as flammable. Keep cigarettes, matches, grinders, and other sparks away from the tank, spilled fuel, and open containers. Work on a level patch of ground where a drip will not run toward a heater or into a storm drain. Pour old fuel only into a container made for gasoline, wipe spills immediately, and wash skin that contacts fuel or oil. If the mower is dripping gasoline, do not try to start it.
Wear closed shoes with decent traction and keep loose clothing, drawstrings, and long hair away from the deck and flywheel area. Send children and pets inside before the first pull. The blade can throw a stick or a forgotten tool as soon as the engine catches. If anyone breathes a heavy dose of exhaust or swallows fuel, get them to fresh air and follow local emergency guidance rather than home remedies.
Why a mower that sat all winter often will not start
Small engines need three things at once: fresh fuel in a fine mist, a timed spark, and enough air. Winter storage attacks all three, which is why a mower that ran last fall can sit silent on the first warm weekend.
Untreated gasoline left in the tank or carburetor does not stay “ready to burn” forever. Over a long idle period it can lose the light ends that help a cold engine fire, pick up moisture, and leave a sticky film in jets and passages. Ethanol-blended fuel is widely sold for cars and small equipment; in a partly filled tank it can attract water. That mix may separate, corrode metal, and leave varnish that a primer bulb cannot push through. Exact shelf life depends on temperature, the container, and whether anyone added stabilizer, so treat old gas as a starting risk rather than counting on a fixed number of months.
Other storage problems show up at the same time. Four-stroke engine oil can look dark, smell like gasoline, or turn milky if water got in. A paper air filter can collapse or soak up oil and dust. The spark plug can foul, crack, or sit under a loose boot. On electric-start models the battery often goes flat after months unused. None of these require you to assume the mower was winterized. Many were simply parked with last season’s fuel still in them.
Two-stroke and four-stroke engines fail for related reasons but not the same service path. A four-stroke has a crankcase oil supply you check on a dipstick or fill plug. A two-stroke typically has no separate crankcase oil; it needs the correct gasoline-and-oil premix from the manufacturer. Old premix gums the same way old gasoline does, and the wrong mix ratio can smoke, seize, or refuse to idle. If you do not know the ratio, do not invent one. Read the engine label or manual before you mix a fresh batch.
Inspect and refresh the fuel system
Look at what is in the tank before you add anything. Fuel that is cloudy, rusty, layered, or smells sharp and varnish-like is a starting risk. Water beads or a second layer at the bottom are another warning. If the mower sat all winter with untreated gasoline, draining is usually wiser than topping off. Fresh fuel poured on top of stale fuel still has to pass through a gummed carburetor.
If someone treated the tank with a fuel stabilizer last fall and the gasoline still looks clear and smells normal, it may be usable. That is a judgment call, not a guarantee. Stabilizer is prevention for future storage when used as the product label directs. It does not reliably rescue fuel that already separated or turned to gum, and no additive makes gasoline last indefinitely.
Emptying a small walk-behind tank
Work outdoors on a cool engine. Let a hot engine cool before you open the fuel cap; pressure and vapors can push liquid out of a warm tank. Use an approved gasoline can, keep a rag under the cap, and avoid tipping the mower so far that oil or fuel pours into the air filter or muffler. Some tanks have a shutoff valve you can close first. Others empty only through the cap or by removing a bowl or line, which is easy to spill and easy to cross-thread.
- Do not siphon by mouth. Gasoline is toxic, and vapors are flammable.
- Do not blow through fuel lines with your mouth to “clear” them.
- Catch drips and wipe the deck, wheels, and ground so you are not standing in a slick.
- Dispose of old gasoline as household hazardous waste under local rules. Do not invent a single nationwide dump method, and do not pour it on soil or down a drain.
After the tank is empty or nearly empty, look at the fuel cap vent, the shutoff if the mower has one, and any visible line. A clogged vent can starve the carburetor even when the tank looks full. A shutoff left closed will do the same. If the carburetor bowl is stained, leaking, or full of flakes, extra attention is warranted. A careful owner can sometimes drain a bowl if the manual shows a drain path. Rebuilding jets, soaking parts in solvent recipes, or guessing at bowl-bolt torque belongs with a small-engine shop if you are not set up for that work.
Refill with fresh gasoline appropriate for that engine, following the mower or engine maker rather than a generic octane or ethanol rule. Two-stroke engines need premix at the ratio printed for that unit. Close the cap firmly, check for leaks, and do not start if fuel is still dripping from a line or gasket.
Check oil, air filter, spark plug, and the cutting deck
These items will not fix a tank full of varnish, but they regularly stop a first start after storage and they protect the engine if it does fire.
Engine oil on a four-stroke
Park the mower on level ground and wait a few minutes if you just tipped it. Wipe the dipstick, seat it the way that engine’s manual describes (some rest in the hole, some screw in), and read the level. Low oil is a reason to add the grade the manufacturer specifies before you run the engine. Oil that looks milky, smells strongly of gasoline, or is full of metal glitter is a reason to change it before the first long run. Capacity, viscosity, and change hours are model-specific; do not guess a universal grade for every walk-behind mower.
Two-stroke engines generally will not have that dipstick check. Confirm you are using fresh premix instead of treating the crankcase like a four-stroke.
Air filter and spark plug
Open the filter cover and look before you spray anything. A paper element that is soaked, torn, oil-logged, or collapsed should be replaced. A foam element that is shredded or permanently greasy should be replaced as well. Light dust can sometimes be tapped out, but a filter that cannot pass air will keep a freshly fueled engine from starting. Replacement intervals vary; condition matters more than a calendar guess.
With the spark-plug lead still off, unscrew the plug and look at the electrode. A plug that is wet with fuel, caked, cracked, or shiny with oil is a poor bet for a first start. Replacement is often cleaner than aggressive scraping when the plug already looks damaged. Gap, reach, and torque belong in the engine documentation, not a one-size chart. Seat a good plug by hand so you do not cross-thread it, then snug it. Push the boot on fully when you are done with deck work, not before.
Clear the cutting deck
Old clippings, mud, a bird nest, or a forgotten stick under the deck can stall the blade the instant the engine catches. Tip the mower only the way the manual allows so fuel and oil stay out of the filter and muffler. Keep the plug wire off or the key out the entire time your hands are near the blade. Clear the chute and the underside. Blade sharpening and balance are worthwhile later maintenance, not a requirement to get the engine running. Never spin the blade with the ignition connected.
Set the controls and use the normal starting sequence
Prep comes first. Only after fuel, oil, filter, plug, and the deck are in order should you reconnect the spark-plug lead or insert the key.
Walk-behind gasoline engines usually cold-start with either a choke plate, a primer bulb, or both. A choke richens the mix by restricting air. A primer squirts a small amount of fuel toward the carburetor. The labels, icons, and manual on that unit win over any generic click count. A modest number of primer presses on a dry, empty system can help. Extra presses after a failed start often flood the engine.
- Set the throttle where that mower shows a cold-start or high-speed position. Many walk-behinds want the lever toward the “rabbit” or fast mark. Follow the panel on your machine.
- If the mower has a fuel shutoff, open it.
- Hold the safety bar against the handle if the design requires it. That bar typically releases the flywheel brake so the engine can turn.
- Stand with solid footing. Pull the cord in a smooth, straight line. Do not wrap the handle around your hand, and do not let the rope snap back uncontrolled.
- On electric start, confirm the battery is charged, the terminals are clean and tight, and the key or button is the one the maker intended. Do not jump around safety switches or hot-wire the starter.
Give the engine a short series of attempts, then stop and think. There is no universal number of pulls that “should” start every mower, and cranking without a pause can flood the carburetor or wear you out next to a machine that has no spark. If you smell a heavy raw-fuel odor or the plug comes out wet, treat it as flooded rather than adding more primer.
Battery voltage, charge time, and cold-cranking needs vary by mower. If the electric starter clicks or turns slowly, charge the battery with a charger meant for that type of battery, or have the battery tested. Skip homemade jumper procedures presented as universal, especially on a machine sitting in grass next to spilled fuel.
If it still will not start
Stop pulling and isolate fuel, spark, and air. More force on the cord rarely fixes a storage problem and can injure a shoulder or break a rope.
Flooded engine
A flooded engine often smells strongly of gasoline, may show a wet plug, and will not pop even though it turns freely. Open the choke or move it toward run, set a higher throttle if the panel allows it, skip the primer, and wait several minutes for excess fuel to evaporate. A few pulls in that state sometimes clear it. Do not keep priming. Do not remove the air filter and pour fuel down the throat as a workaround.
Fuel, spark, and air, in that order
Confirm the tank actually has fresh fuel and that a shutoff is open. A clogged cap vent or pinched line can look like an empty carburetor. Checking whether fuel reaches the bowl should stay conservative: look for leaks, a dry bowl after you know the tank has fuel, or a primer bulb that will not fill. Creating a spray of gasoline to “see if it is getting there” is a fire risk.
Then confirm the plug wire is fully seated and the plug itself is dry and intact. A missing spark after those checks can mean a bad plug, a damaged lead, or an ignition part. Leave the coil air gap, flywheel key, and magneto work to someone with the service data. Those adjustments are easy to get wrong and are not a backyard guess.
If fuel is fresh, the filter is open, the plug looks serviceable, and the engine is not flooded, a gummed jet or stuck float is more likely than a failed pull starter. A rope that will not rewind is a starter problem. An engine that turns easily and never coughs is usually fuel or spark.
Starting fluid is not a default fix. It is highly flammable, can be harsh on some engines, and should never be sprayed near a hot exhaust, a lit cigarette, or a running shop heater. If you are not following a procedure written for that engine, skip it and take the mower to a shop.
Stop and get professional service if you find a fuel leak you cannot correct, a burning smell, a starter that will not turn the engine, or no response after the basic checks above. Do not defeat kill switches, bypass a blade brake, or keep cranking an engine that is spraying fuel.
Battery, corded electric, and riding mowers
Not every mower that sat all winter has a carburetor to clean. Battery and corded electric mowers skip stale-fuel prep entirely. What they need instead is a sound electrical path and dry conditions.
A battery mower that will not wake up after storage often needs a full charge on the maker’s charger, clean pack contacts, and a pack that was not stored completely empty or soaking wet. Do not open cells or attempt pack-level repair. A corded mower should not be used on a wet lawn or with a cut, pinched, or repaired-with-tape cord. Moisture and damaged insulation are shock hazards. Inspect the cord, use an outlet and extension cord rated for outdoor power tools if the manual allows an extension, and keep the connection out of standing water.
Riding mowers add interlocks on top of the same gasoline issues a walk-behind can have. Many will not crank unless the operator is in the seat, the brake or clutch is in the required position, the blade or PTO is off, and a safety key is present. A no-start after winter is as likely to be a flat battery or an unsatisfied seat switch as it is a tank of old gas. Charge or test the battery, sit in the seat, set the pedals and PTO as the decal shows, and try the normal key sequence. Deck height and PTO behavior vary by model; the rider’s manual overrides a generic pattern. Do not bypass the seat switch or other interlocks to force a start, and do not treat jumper cables as a casual fix beside an open fuel system.
After it runs, and how to avoid the same fight next spring
Once the engine catches, stay outdoors. A successful start does not make garage exhaust safe. Let it idle and listen. Watch the ground and the carburetor area for leaks. Note odd smoke, a knocking sound, or hardware that worked loose over the winter. Shut down if fuel weeps, if oil pressure warnings appear on a rider, or if the blade housing shakes violently.
A short outdoor idle is enough to confirm it will stay running and that controls return to normal after you ease the choke off. There is no single warm-up time that every engine requires. If it idles, the blade brake works, and nothing is leaking, it is reasonable to mow. If it only runs on full choke, dies when you engage the blade, or smokes heavily after the first minutes, stop and service it instead of finishing the yard.
Refuel only after the engine has cooled enough that the cap and tank are not heat-soaked. Opening a hot fuel system can push vapors out toward the muffler.
Next winter is easier if you do not repeat the same storage mistakes. Use gasoline within a reasonable period rather than leaving a can from last spring in the shed. If you store fuel in the mower at all, follow the manufacturer’s fuel-and-oil guidance and consider a stabilizer only as that product’s label describes. Some owners run the carburetor dry; others store with a treated tank. Either approach beats parking the mower with unknown, untreated fuel and hoping. Change oil when it is contaminated, keep the air filter dry, and store the machine where moisture and animals cannot pack the deck or chew a fuel line.
A lawn mower that sat unused over winter usually starts after you treat it as a stored machine first and a pull-start second. Fresh fuel, correct oil, a clear air path, a serviceable spark plug, and the choke or primer that engine actually has will get most consumer walk-behinds running. When those are right and it still will not fire, a small-engine shop is faster and safer than another afternoon of flooding the carburetor.
